Be Mindful of Our Rights

Some Morons and Barbaric from QCPD and a Confused NCRPO Chief

Makes a Sad Philippine Society

By: Edison Gatioan

April 18, 2009

In the midst of the circus going around the alleged suicide of Ted Failon’s wife, the QCPD policemen suddenly let out of its moron and barbaric members to teach us a good lesson on warrant less arrest and police brutality. The shameless show of force and wanton disregard of human rights only exposed how pig-headed some of our police officers can be. The arrest of the victim’s relatives and the house helpers without warrant is deplorable and unacceptable in a civilized and democratic society.

If the police involved in the series of warrant less arrests that followed the alleged suicide incident can justify their action as constitutional, then I will say to the professors of Constitutional Law and Criminal Procedure that shame on them for not knowing their law better than those thugs in uniform.

Equally distressful is the confusion shown by the NCRPO Chief, when he lamented that ABS CBN highlighted more on the abuses of the police instead of the case involving the suspicious “suicide incident”. Let me remind the good officer that while the effort of the police to investigate the truth behind the incident deserves commendation, the issue has been overshadowed by a more important issue, RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS and RULE OF LAW.

Assuming for the sake of argument that ABS CBN is more interested in protecting Mr. Failon (which my malicious mind also suspect), or even if Mr. Failon may be guilty as the police appears to suspect, the issue is too insignificant compared to the SERIOUS INJURY inflicted against the public with the shameless and wanton disregard of human rights and rule of law by the police officers concern. This is not to say that we should let Mr. Failon off the hook, for God’s sake, if he is guilty, he should be thrown to jail. But due process must be afforded him not because he is a TV personality, but because a civilized society ought to observe due process to the mighty as well as to the weak. This is expressly mandated by the Filipino people in our Constitution. To add insult to injury not only to the more than 90 million Filipinos, but to humanity itself, they did it in front of news cameras.

Hah! If human rights violation committed by our very “protector”, in front of TV cameras at that, does not deserve more attention than the interest of running after a possible suspect, then the priority of the good officer must be fundamentally defective. It is very unfortunate for this writer to criticize a good and well respected officer in the person of Chief Superintendent Roberto Rosales, but this is not about his character. This is about his bias favoring professional achievement against the more fundamental issue of respect for human rights. If this represents the general manner by which our police officers think, oh Holy God, please bless us by blessing our Police officers with the ability to think and act right.

Brothers and sisters in this sad Philippine society, I urge you then to be mindful of your rights, and express it in unequivocal term, lest we wake up one day without it.

My Life: An exciting journey of endless discoveries...
By: Edison Gatioan
January 31, 2007

Just as I thought that I was about to understand certain thing perfectly, I would realize that such understanding is just a conclusion based on my own restrictive thinking influenced by my present life script.

Life indeed is an exciting journey of endless discoveries. Those things that I believe is right and which I thought I know perfectly well when I was younger or when my understanding is too plain yet, would turn out to be the reverse of my very own conviction today. And I know I should always remind myself that my present thinking will always be an object of refinement as time offers me a chance to learn lessons in life and hopefully broaden my wisdom.

At this stage of my life, I am beginning to realize that life indeed begins at 40. It is at this point of my life when I started to understand that I was in fact just about to understand. This is the exciting part of our journey we called Life. As we go on through the years, we discover new things and our mind evolves into a higher height of thinking. Then we have to humble ourselves and admit the ignorance of our younger mind. And this shall go on as we surf through time and refine our thinking toward the endless journey to excellence.

Life is an exciting journey of no end, because our mind is an unstoppable engine in constant revolution capable of attaining new heights.

My Christmas Thoughts

My Christmas Thoughts
December 18, 2006

Christmas always brings joy to our hearts. During these times, we remembered our relatives, friends and loved ones. Giving gifts is always a way saying I remembered you. Christmas may also means good foods or a nice vacation. But what is the real essence of Christmas?

Although I’m not a devoted Christian, nor am I a devoted disciple to any religion, my humble understanding is that what we are celebrating is the birth of Christ and the unequaled sacrifices He gave for his love of man. Unqualified love that led Him to the cross.

Therefore Christmas is a celebration of love. What then is love? There are 3 different levels of love. First is the Romantic love. Here, we blend our emotions with our physical desires. Second is Platonic love. It can be said that this level of love is a higher form of human emotions because physical desires is not a consideration for its existence. The third one is the so-called Spiritual love. This is the highest form of love.

In the first two levels of love, many lives have been sacrificed in its name. For it is in these two levels of love that lines were drawn. A line that divide us from the rest. A line that distinguish between WE and THEM. The third level of love is the highest form of love. It is this kind of love that brings Christ to the cross.

It is also the third level of love that moved Gandhi to detach from material things and offered 52 years of extreme hard life struggling for the freedom of the colored people in
South Africa and India through peaceful mean. This is the kind of love which makes a hero out of an ordinary being.

It is also this kind of love that our country need of us and our leaders to steer our country to the right path.

May this Christmas rekindle the love within us so that we shall move as one for the building of a better tomorrow.

Perhaps not for us but for the generations to come…

A Step Closer to the Bar. What Now?

A Step Closer to the Bar. What Now?
By: Edison Query
October 18, 2006

Another 5 grueling months of studies has passed. It only means that another 10% to the finish line in law school has just been attained. Yes, we’ve just crossed the 30% mark and with barely 70% to go, what seem to be afar is getting nearer and nearer.

This is a time to enjoy our well deserved 2 weeks vacation. A good time to reflect on our inner motives as well. After law school and passing the bar, what’s next?

Great challenges lie ahead of law school. Our families surely look forward to have us back working full time again as a good provider. Our country is in dire need of good leaders to steer its ship to shore. Humanity is shouting for justice because some of our learned leaders lost their way in their navigation to excellence.

Allow me to share a few questions culminated from some of my encounters with people who took time to share their thoughts with me;

If I’m 100% today, how many percent am I when I entered law school in terms of knowledge?

If I am 20% when I entered law school, it would mean that I’m now 5 times better by this time. And what more does tomorrow offers if I continue this quest for knowledge?

With this simple mathematics in mind, can I then conclude that with a steady effort, I can attain great height for whatever I wanted to be and wherever I set my sight on?

How then can I attain great height? Is it a matter of luck? A matter of intellectual gift? Or is it more of a matter of choice?

If I can be great after all, why then should I be great? So that people will build monuments for me? Or so that I can matter in the life of my fellow people?

What then is my motivation of dreaming to become a lawyer? Is becoming a lawyer a dream by itself? Or is it a dream to serve humanity that keeps me wanting to become a lawyer?
My dear friends, the sacrifices demanded in law school are just but a small price to pay compared to the demand of history rested upon you and me.

Carry on and give a good fight, we are inch by inch closer to our dream. Let us walk through this great and noble avenue of life together so that we could share the real joy of life in our twilight.
